With nearly 9 of every 10 Maryland residents living in urban areas, urban forests have significant effects on the daily lives of people around the state. Urban forests contribute to a range of benefits to the people living in and around them, offering energy savings through cooling in the summer, mitigating flooding and contributing to improved water quality, filtering pollutants, and many other economic, environmental, recreational, and aesthetic benefits. Urban forests are subject to intense stress, including urban heat island effects, air pollution, compacted soils, competition from invasive species, and predation from introduced pests and pathogens. Urban and community forestry recognizes the role of community members in the creation and maintenance of healthy urban forests to maximize the benefits that our forests offer and the need to extend such benefits to all members of our community.

On May 11, 2018, the Maryland Forestry Foundation partnered with the Maryland Urban & Community Forest Committee, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service, the University of Maryland College Park, the Maryland Association of Forest Conservancy District Boards and Baltimore-Washington Partners for Forest Stewardship to convene the inaugural Maryland Urban and Community Forestry Summit. Over 170 attendees came from public, private, nonprofit, and academic institutions to discuss the management of urban forests and building engagement with community members to develop long-term stewardship of our urban forests. The summit provided an opportunity for people involved in the management of urban forests to connect with colleagues from other jurisdictions and other professional specializations, helping to build and strengthen networks of urban foresters in and around the state of Maryland.
